About HERVeg.05

HERVeg.05 is on a mission to combat malnutrition in Tanzania’s rural communities by providing essential nutrient-dense vegetable and poultry bundles to women farmers. Our initiative addresses the critical need for improved dietary diversity and health outcomes in areas with limited access to nutritious food. Through a combination of flexible mobile payment options and comprehensive agricultural and nutritional training, we ensure that farmers can not only access but also effectively utilize these resources to enhance their food security and overall well-being.

Looking ahead, HERVeg.05 envisions a future where Tanzania, Africa, and the world are marked by healthier, self-sufficient communities. By empowering local farmers with the tools and knowledge needed for sustainable agriculture, we aim to foster long-term food security and resilience against malnutrition. Our goal is to create a ripple effect that extends beyond individual households, contributing to broader regional and global advancements in nutrition

What we do?

Nutrient-Dense Vegetable and Poultry Bundles:

01. Vegetable Bundles: We provide farmers with a variety of nutrient-rich vegetables to improve dietary diversity. Each bundle includes seeds for planting and detailed guides to help farmers grow these vegetables effectively.

02. Poultry Bundles: Farmers receive protein-rich chickens, which are essential for enhancing nutritional intake and boosting overall health in communities with limited food resources.

Flexible Payment Structure:

01. Mobile Layaway System: To make our bundles accessible, we use a mobile payment platform that allows farmers to purchase their bundles in affordable, incremental payments. This approach reduces financial barriers and helps farmers invest in their crops without immediate financial strain.

Agricultural and Nutritional Training:

01. Training Programs: We offer comprehensive training sessions that cover climate-smart agricultural practices and nutrition. These programs empower farmers with the knowledge to optimize their yields, adopt sustainable practices, and make informed dietary choices.

02. Knowledge Sharing: Farmers learn effective planting techniques, understand the nutritional value of their produce, and are equipped with the skills needed for improved food production and healthier lifestyles.

Last-Mile Distribution System:

01. Efficient Delivery: Our distribution system ensures that resources reach farmers reliably and efficiently. This system supports continuous agricultural activities and ensures that farmers have access to essential resources throughout the year.

By integrating these components, HERVeg.05 addresses immediate nutritional needs and supports long-term self-sufficiency, fostering healthier, more resilient communities.

Who does HERVeg.05 work with?

HERVEg.05 prioritizes working with vulnerable groups most susceptible to malnutrition, including

01.Children: Ensuring access to a variety of nutritious vegetables is crucial for their healthy development.

02. Adolescents: Proper nutrition during adolescence is vital for physical and cognitive growth.

03. Women (pregnant or breastfeeding): Women often face the "triple burden" of undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and overweight/obesity. HERVEg.05 specifically targets women to empower them and improve overall family health.

HERVeg.05 is a relatively young organization, having been founded in December 2023. We began full operations in January 2024 and are actively working to expand our reach and impact.

HERVEg.05 leverages Village Saving and Loan Associations (VSLA) groups as a way to efficiently reach large numbers of vulnerable people. By working within these established groups, we can ensure that we are reaching those most in need. This approach maximizes our impact and resource utilization.

Here's a breakdown of the benefits of this model:

  1. 01. Reaching more farmers: We can connect with a larger number of farmers in a shorter time frame.
  2. 02. Efficient resource allocation: We leverage existing community structures to streamline program delivery.
  3. 03.Community building: We promote a sense of community and shared responsibility within VSLA groups.

This approach maximizes our impact and resource utilization, making our model "BIG, SIMPLE, and CHEAP."

HERVEg.05 prioritizes working in areas with high malnutrition rates. We focus our efforts on vulnerable communities within Tanzania to create the most significant impact. Currently we are working in Njombe region and planning to expand in Ruvuma, Iringa, Mbeya, Rukwa, Kigoma and Songwe

HERVeg.05 envisions a Tanzania free from malnutrition, where empowered farmers, particularly women, can achieve sustainable livelihoods. Our core values directly contribute to achieving this vision:

  • 01. Empowering Impact: We combine efficiency and innovation to optimize resources, streamline processes, and maximize the positive change we bring to communities.
  • 02.Unwavering Quality: We are committed to providing high-quality seeds, training, and support, empowering our farmers with the tools they need to succeed.
  • 03. Building Trust Together: We believe that building trust and fostering lasting relationships with our community is fundamental to our success.
  • 04. Collaborative Spirit: We champion teamwork and collaboration, recognizing that powerful solutions come from working together.

HERVEg.05 leverages a dedicated field team with a multi-layered structure to ensure effective support reaches farmers on the ground. Here's a breakdown of the team's roles:

01. Village Agriculture and Nutritional Officers (VANOs): These are the frontline heroes directly interacting with farmers. They provide training sessions, address farmer concerns, and offer ongoing guidance throughout the program cycles.

02. VANO Supervisors: They oversee the work of VANOs within designated zones. Supervisors ensure program implementation is on track and offer support to VANOs in their daily interactions with farmers.

03. Zone Field Coordinators: These coordinators manage a group of VANO supervisors and their respective VANOs within a specific geographic area. They provide leadership and ensure program consistency across their assigned zone.

04. Program Management Team: This team oversees the entire field operation. It typically includes a Program Associate, Program Manager, and Program Director. This team is responsible for strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation, resource allocation, and overall program effectiveness.

This multi-layered structure allows HERVEg.05 to provide localized support tailored to specific needs within different communities. It ensures farmers have access to dedicated personnel for training, troubleshooting, and ongoing guidance throughout their participation in the program.

03. Constant Innovation: We at HERVEg.05 believe in continuous improvement. We actively seek new methods and technologies to enhance our program's effectiveness and reach.

04. Scalability by Design: The program's core elements, like mobile payments and training modules, are designed to be easily replicated and expanded to reach a wider range of communities.

05. Focus on Impact and Value: Our core mission is to create lasting change. We prioritize solutions that deliver tangible benefits to farmers, such as improved nutrition, financial security, and sustainable farming practices.

HERVEg.05 is committed to long-term impact. We are actively planning for the next decade with a focus on:

01. Scale (Expansion): We aim to strategically expand our program to reach more communities experiencing malnutrition in Tanzania.

02. Human-Centered Design and Value Creation: We believe in empowering farmers. We'll actively involve them in program development through a Human-Centered Design approach.

03. Innovation: We continuously explore innovative approaches to address evolving challenges and enhance program effectiveness.

04. Monitoring and Evaluation: We remain committed to a robust monitoring and evaluation system

By focusing on these key areas, HERVEg.05 is well-positioned to make a significant contribution to tackling malnutrition and building a stronger, more sustainable agricultural future for Tanzania for the next decade and beyond.

HERVEg.05 defines its impact as the positive and measurable change we create in the lives of farmers and their communities. This encompasses:

01. Improved Nutritional Outcomes: Increased dietary diversity, reduced malnutrition rates, and better overall health within participating households.

02. Enhanced Livelihoods: Increased agricultural productivity, higher incomes from vegetable sales, and greater household food security for participating farmers.

03. Empowerment and Knowledge Gain: Improved knowledge of nutrition and sustainable farming practices among participating farmers, leading to long-term self-sufficiency.

By measuring these key areas, HERVEg.05 can effectively demonstrate our contribution to a healthier, more prosperous future for Tanzanian farming communities.
